It will be observed that the sub-divisions are numbered through
out. I incline to the opinion that in the Roman perioda translator,
guidedby precisely the same motives as those thatactuated Dr.
Pleijte, thus identified the sections which he discussed. It is
important to note this fact, because there are two blanks in the
Fayoum section, which have been attributed to the incomplete
condition of this copy. Shouldwe assume that the copyist had
neglectedto complete the figure 13 in Plate III? I think not.
If it be taken to refer to the perennial canalof the Fayoum, the
Bahr Jusuf,it would rightlybe represented by only the upper
portion. The lower partof a man standing in its bed would be
hiddenby the stream. So also, the canal of the South is represented
as a blank. Shouldwe not find here an allusion to its constant
flow,whilethe lotus, springingup in the canal of the North, points
to some importantdifferencein the functions they discharged?
If this emblematic and conventional mapis of the first century,
and does relateto the Fayoum, its great canal,and famous Labyrinth,
