Oh thou whoshinestforthfromthe Moon, thouwhogivestlight
fromthe Moon, let me come forthat large amidthy train, let me be
revealedas one of those in glory. Let the Tuat be opened for me.
Heream I: let me come forthuponthis day, andbe glorified. Let
the glorified onesgrantto me that I live and that mineadversaries
be brought to me in bonds beforethe divine Circle; may the Genius
of my mother be propitiated thereby,as I rise up upon my feet with
a sceptre of gold in my hand, andlop off the limbs. MayI rise up,
a Babe [from between] the knees of Sothis, when theyclose
together.(1)
Notes.
Thefirst part of this chapteris nearly identicalwithChapter2.
No copy of it is found in the papyri of the older period. In place
of it M. Naville has published a chapter bearingthe same title, and
whichis found in five ancient papyri. Thesetextshowever are
extremelydiscordantand corrupt, and in the more difficult, and to
us more interesting,passages musthavebeenquiteunintelligibleto
the copyists. Thesecondword, for instance, of line 8 is ri in Ca,
the corresponding wordis.. htu in Ta, tat in Pb, rau in la and hit in
Aa. A discrepancy not lessviolent is encountered afterthe next
threewords. Theoldestextantformof the chapter is that of Aa,
the papyrus of Nebseni; it is also the shortest, and the other forms
appearto me to exhibit signsof interpolation. But M. Naville was
quiterightin taking the text of Ca as his basis for the collation of
the texts.
