THE ROYAL TITLES

I have, for many yearspast,taughtthatthesetitlesindicatethe
sovereigntyclaimedby Egyptian kingsoverEastand West, just as
T3RasserttheirclaimoverSouthand North.
The following passagefromthe splendid (but, alas! posthumous)
workof M. de Rochemonteix on Edfu, p. 34, seems to me to settle
the question.

" Horus of Behutit, kingof the Two Worlds, rulerof the whole
Earth, bearingthe j^^ on his front ; rising in the East as Tmu
"a\, and setting in the West as Uatit, D_."
Thelacunanow existing afterII1 should mostprobablybe filled
up by J| == nefer ; Tmu-nefer beingthe rising Sun,of whom )\
in this title is the ideogram, as j7- is that of Uat'it.
Therewas a Uat'it of the East as well as of the West (the
morningandevening Greys), and,as the same text informsus,
throughthe gift of these Uraeithe king became' seized' of the Two
Worldsas Lord of the East and Lord of the West, -" ' M.
Thesetitles,as a neighbouring text shows, belongnot only to
Horusbut to Hathor, and they do not refer any more thanthoseof
I and y&CQ to political divisionsof Egypt, but to the whole
universe.
