SECRETARY'S REPORT
FOR THEYEAR1893.

TheSocietyhasagainsufferedseverelossby the death of several of
its honoured anddistinguishedMembers. In my last ReportI pointed
out that althoughthe number on the Roll of Members hadbeenfairly
maintained,it required someefforton the part of eachindividualMember
to increase the number of Members on the list. I am happy to be able
to state thatthisefforthasbeento some extentmade,andI can only
hopethattheeffortsof the Memberswillbe continued. It cannot be
pointedout too olten thatit is only by such assistancethatthe Council
caneverbe enabled to extend the operations of the Society ; that this
assistance also bringsadvantages to each individual Member,as if
generallygivenit would enabletheCouncilto enlarge the Proceedings,
andplacemorematerialin their hands.
TheTwenty-ThirdSessioncommencedon the 1st of November, 189',
andwas completedin June, 1893,twopartsof the Proceedings for the
succeedingSessionbeingincludedin the year. Duringthisperioda
largenumberof papers havebeensubmittedto the Society, which have
equalledthosereceivedduringformeryears.
The Society is certainly to be congratulated on the numberof
interestingpaperssubmitted. Classingthem,as in former years,under
subjects,I am glad to commence withoneof a series of papers the value
of which hasneverbeensurpassedin any of our publications. At the
JanuaryMeetingthe President continuedhis Translation andCommen
taryof the Book of the Dead. Variouschapterswillbe found in the
Proceedings for February, March,April, May,June, November,and
December, in which ChapterLXXwasreached. To the President we
have alsobeen indebtedfor other shorterarticles: (June) —Thegods
AkarandSeb,in which is explained for the first timean interesting point
in Egyptian mythology; and a note on the nameof Pharaoh. In the
Januarynumberalsoappeareda communication fromDr.Wiedemann,
on Cobalt in ancient Egypt. ProfessorE. Lef£bure, in the same
part,commencesa series of articles, the first of which is entitled Etude
sur Abydos; continuedin the June number. In February A. C. Bryant,
B.A.,andF. W. Readbroughtforwardsomeinterestingparticularsof
Khuenatenandhis form of worship.
Twoveryvaluablepapers havebeenissued(MarchandJune)from
the pen of Brugsch-Pasha,entitledla lumiere zodiacaleet sa representa
tionsur les monuments egyptiens.
