To Professor Dr.Karl Piehlwe have beenindebted for the
additions to his Notes de Philologie Egyptienne, continued in the
Junenumber. In a paper printedin May, F. L. Griffith, F.S.A.,
continued his former communications by dealing withthe Egyptian
WeightsandMeasures,and in the December numberhe discussed a
detailof Geography in the Inscription of Herkhuf. In the May number
F. Max Muller,underthe title of the Story of the Peasant, pointed
out the class distinctionsexistingin Egypt.
TheJunenumber, whichcontainsmanyinterestingpapersbesides
those already mentioned, brings the volume to a close. E. Towry
Whyte,M.A.,in his paper on Pectorals, has brought togethera quantity
of information on the subject, and the Society is also indebted to him for
the care andtroublehe expended on the drawings reproducedin the
platesillustratinghis paper. A. L. Lewis contributeda note on the
Pharaoh of the Exodus. G. Willoughby Frazer, F.S.A. gave a
seriesof plates of inscriptions, withdescriptions,entitled El Kab and
Gebelin. The Rev. C. M. Cobern pointed out a peculiarly sacred
postureavoidedin ancestorworship,and Dr. M. Spiegelberg gavea
list of the Viziers of the New Empire. In November W. E. Crum
described someste'nefromWadyHaifa,preservedat Oxford. In the
samenumberF. Cope Whitehousebroughtforwardthoseportionsof
the Moeris Papyrus whichhavenot before beenpublished, andthe
Societyis indebted to him for the plates illustratinghis paper.
Of communicationsdealingwithBabylonianand Assyrian antiquities,
the first to be mentioned are (January) thoseby Professor Dr. Fritz
Hommel,Gi3galla-ki, Babylon; Ki-nu-nir-ki, Borsippa; and a note on
variouscorrespondingsigns in the languages of Egypt andAssyria.
In May will be found otheridentificationsby the same author,Gish-
dubarra,Gibil-gamish, Nimrod; a supplementary noteappearing in
November,and in March a paper on the Ten Patriarchsof Berosus.
TheREv.A. J. Delattre, S.J.,continuedhis translations of the
interestingLettresde Tell-el-Amarna, of which othersectionsappeared
in May andJune. In March the Hon. Miss Plunket discussed
questionsconnectedwiththe signs of the Zodiac.
RobertBrown,Jun.,F.S.A.,in the same number,carriedforward
his studies in a paper entitledEuphrateanStellar Researches,continued
in the June number. Theo.G. Pinches (June)translateda tablet of
some interest,a Babylonian decreethat a certain rite should be per
formed,and W. Francis Ainsworth,F.S.A.,discussedthe Achmethas
or Ecbatanas of Western Asia. TheRev.A. Lowy (March)contributed
somenoteson the Tower of Babel.
Of subjectsoccupyingthe border landmaybe mentioned the paper
by the Rev. C. J. Ball, on the origin of the Phoenician Alphabet. On
the subject of Hebrew writing,the Rev. G. Margoliouth contributed
an examination of the Superlinear Punctuation,its origin, the different
