Environment and aquaculture in developing countries

farming systems.
A thorough understanding of the
sociocultural environmental context into
which the introduction of small-scale
aquaculture is proposed has been outlined
in this paper. The tailoringof systems to fit
that context is an absolutely essential
prerequisite to any development project,
since congruence or not with often complex
sociocultural variables guarantees either
the success or failure of the introduction of
any innovation, all other variables being
equal. It is axiomatic therefore, although
not often appreciated, that aquaculture
must be adapted to society; the converse is
not worthy of consideration.
