Glossary


ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene) Plastic pipe used in plumbing construction.
Abut Joining end to end.
Accessible Describes a site, building, facility, or portion thereof that complies with these guide-
lines.
Accessible Route A continuous unobstructed path connecting all accessible elements and spaces
of a building or facility. Interior accessible routes may include corridors, floors, ramps, elevators, lifts, and
clear floor space at fixtures. Exterior accessible routes may include parking access aisles, curb ramps,
crosswalks at vehicular ways, walks, ramps, and lifts.
AC Current Electrical current that reverses direction at regular intervals (cycles).
Addendum A written or graphic instruction issued by the architect prior to the execution of the con-
tract which modifies or interprets the bidding documents by additions, deletions, clarifications or correc-
tions. An addendum becomes part of the contract documents when the contract is executed.
Adhesive A bonding material used to bond two materials together.
Adobe A heavy clay soil used in many southwestern states to make sun-dried bricks.
Aggregate Fine, lightweight, coarse, or heavyweight grades of sand, vermiculite, perlite, or gravel
added to cement for concrete or plaster.
Air Handling Unit A mechanical unit used for air conditioning or movement of air as in direct sup-
ply or exhaust of air within a structure.
Aligned Section A section view in which some internal features are revolved into or out of the plane
of the view.
Alligatoring A pattern of rough cracking on a coated surface, similar in appearance to alligator skin.
American Bond Brickwork pattern consisting of five courses of stretchers followed by one bonding
course of headers.
Analog The processing of data by continuously variable values.
Anchor Bolt Metal rods, varying in diameter, to join and secure one material to another.
Angle A figure formed by two lines or planes extending from, or diverging at, the same point.
ANSI The American National Standards Institute. ANSI is an umbrella organization that adminis-
ters and coordinates the national voluntary consensus standards system. http://www.ansi.org.
