Joseph’s younger brother, Ephraim, returns as William. All mortals live multiple incarnations (mortal
probations) to experience different life situations on earth. Until the 1800’s, human beings were restricted
from developing advanced technologies, to protect them from destroying themselves. With the establishment
of the United States, the time arrived to allow people greater freedom, to determine how they would use
this freedom. Four semi-mortals known as the “Three Nephites” and “John the Beloved” were sent to
America to provide personal guidance and assistance during Joseph’s early development.

Orchestrating a True Messenger’s Foundation

Ephraim and William Smith

Ephraim Smith was born March 13, 1810 and died a little over a week later.^1 Being
just five years old, Joseph wasn’t affected much by the brief introduction of another younger
sibling. Because there was very little birth control at the time, most fertile women became
pregnant every year. Lucy Smith didn’t have much choice of whether or not she was going
to get pregnant, as long as she was satisfying Joseph Sr.’s natural libido (her husband’s
sexual desires). The laws of nature that affect childbirth didn’t give a woman a personal
choice in the matter, nor do advanced beings interfere, except to accomplish purposes that
affect all mankind—which, in preparing a true messenger by surrounding Joseph with
siblings that would help groom him, they did.
Advanced beings overseeing Joseph’s life determined that he needed at least another
year to gain some important childhood foundational experiences, which would not have been
possible with another small infant demanding his mother’s attention. To preserve the
purposes of mortality, no one is treated as “special;” therefore, while the free-will of his
parents to pursue joy, on the one hand, and its effects, on the other, were preserved, Joseph’s
mission was the paramount concern. As a result, Ephraim was taken from the family; and
precisely one year to the day after Ephraim had been born, his essence was allowed to return
in the body of another Smith child on March 13, 1811,^2 whom they named William.

Past Memories Restricted

The absence of knowledge and technology concerning methods of birth control in the
1800’s and the resulting constraint on personal freedoms, provides a segue into another
important explanation concerning the timing and location of Joseph’s birth in America. One
may wonder why the advanced beings overseeing our mortal world would intervene to help
establish the “free” government and land of America. Until the 19th Century A.D., human
free will had been purposefully restricted. During thousands of years of mortality leading up
to that time, human inventions and technologies had been rudimentary and unchanged. This
was because the ability of the imperfect mortal brain to access past memories of a more
advanced society was restricted by an energy field engineered for the mortal brain by
