Joseph Smith Biography

Without Disclosing My True Identity

37 And Mohammed wandered in the Spirit for many years, searching
within himself for the truths which were made evident unto him by the
Holy Ghost.
38 And when he was near unto forty years [like unto Moses], Mohammed
retired once again into the cave, being depressed in the spirit because of the
many disputations that he had witnessed among his people. And he, for the
first time since those days of his childhood when he was taught to pray to a
God in whom he did not believe; neither did he understand this God to
whom he was taught to pray;
39 Notwithstanding, Mohammed knelt before God and prayed unto him,
saying: Great God, all power and glory be to Thy Holy Name. I know Thee
not; but this I do know, even that Thou wouldst not have that there exist
among Thy children the contention that causeth hate and persecution of
brothers and sisters, all who believe in Thee and seek for Thy truths.
40 And when he had spoken these words, a pillar of light appeared directly
above him, which light was brighter than the sun at noon day and which did
light the cave that it shown in brilliant white; yea, even the rocks did glow
exceedingly because of this light.^26

This illustration provides a reflective parallel to Joseph’s life that readily relates to
the common sense of those who study him. Although somewhat a sidelight, this helps fill in
more of the puzzle of who Joseph Smith was and gives a more complete and profound idea
as to the true nature of his role among true messengers. By thus including the real truth
about his place among our Muslim siblings, as well as among the Mormons and the Hindus,
we readily establish that, as the result of his incarnations, his influence directly affects
almost one-half of this earth’s population. Alongside this has come the creation of some of
the world’s most invasive religions.
To continue with Joseph’s biographical sketch, on September 23, 1824, just short
of his nineteenth birthday, an advanced human, Moroni, having visited him a year
previously, visited Joseph for a second time. With advanced knowledge and technology,
Moroni adjusted Joseph’s mortal brain so that he could recall many of his past
incarnations. With some effort, due to the imperfections of his mortal brain, the young
Joseph began to recall some vivid experiences, particularly as Mormon, Alma (the elder),
and Nephi. Given this ability, Joseph would be motivated and enticed by his own flesh
and mortality to attend to and accomplish the task of bringing the Book of Mormon to the
world. Joseph needed the enhanced memory of his mortal brain so that he could achieve
the proper motivation to use his free will the way that Mormon, Alma, Ether, and Nephi
would expect him to do.
Critical to understanding the purpose of the Book of Mormon and the need to translate
and publish the same, is to remember that Mormon, the father of Moroni, not only later
incarnated as Joseph Smith, Jr., but that Joseph was also Nephi, the other main author of the
unsealed part of the gold plates. Moroni wrote a few words on the unsealed part of the gold
plates and then vastly more than his father on the sealed part of the plates. On September 23,
1825, a year after Joseph (then age 19) was allowed to know of his previous incarnations,
Joseph, with all the exuberance of youth and his abundant sense of humor, greeted Moroni
like this: “Well, hello son! How was your travel?”
