(^12) SNS, Preface, IX: “The purpose of life is to experience an existence without being governed
by eternal laws and truth. By this means, we can become convinced of how important these laws are
to our happiness. In this probationary state (mortality) we prove to ourselves what the values are that
we will accept and support as eternal free-willed beings. Thus, we are allowed a “schoolroom”
atmosphere, in which, through trial and error, we can determine what works and what does not in
each of our individual pursuits of happiness.”

Although not specified in D&C, section 89, Mormons are counseled by their modern leaders
not to drink beverages containing caffeine: “We know that cola drinks contain the drug caffeine. We
know caffeine is not wholesome nor prudent for the use of our bodies. It is only sound judgment to
conclude that cola drinks and any others that contain caffeine or other harmful ingredients should
not be used.” (H. Burke Peterson, “Q&A: Questions and Answers | Is it against Church standards to
drink cola beverages or any other beverage containing caffeine?” New Era, Oct. 1975, 34.)

Mormon men are counseled not to have facial hair, particularly those who work in the
temples. While there is no official doctrine on the matter found in the Church Handbook of
Instructions, Mormons are continually commanded by their local authorities to be clean-shaven.

Lucifer reveals the Masonic signs of secular intelligence and industry—the honors and glories of the
world—the square and the compass, which ironically (and this is important), are the same marks
sewn into the LDS temple garments worn by the patrons who receive their endowments. Joseph
