Without Disclosing My True Identity

(^29) See ch. 7, n. 4.
(^30) One’s “name” is the representation of his works. Brigham Young did nothing like what Joseph
Smith, Jr. did: he never received a revelation and he utterly ignored the free will of the people. Joseph gave
the people the church that they wanted; Brigham gave the people the church that he wanted.
One can get an idea of why Mother Smith felt this way from the following reference: “21
Mar., [1858]...Brigham Young tells [at a] special conference that Joseph Smith disobeyed revelation
by returning to Nauvoo to stand trial, that the church’s founding prophet lost the Spirit of God the
last days of his life, and died as [an] unnecessary martyr. He publishes this talk as a pamphlet.” (D.

1997] 757.)
