Joseph Smith Biography

Eighteen (1823)

had been taught by the LDS Church. At that moment, the thought entered my mind that the angel
standing before me might be one of Lucifer’s angels, sent to deceive me and play on my doubts about
the Church. [See D&C, 129.]
“Responding to my confusion, Joseph said, ‘I am going to touch the side of your head,
Christopher. You will not be harmed.’
“Joseph reached towards my right temple, and reacting naturally, I leaned my head
away from him. Fixating on his warm smile gave me all the assurance I needed to relax and allow
him to touch me. What happened next cannot be described sufficiently because of my lack of
vocabulary and the mortal expressions unavailable to portray it. Not at any time in my life, nor at
any time thereafter, have I ever felt such a sensation—an inconceivable rush—of the most
incredible spiritual ecstasy one could ever imagine. It started at the point of Joseph’s touch on my
right temple and surged throughout my entire body. The sensation was similar (but a thousand
times more exhilarating) to the feeling one has just before fainting. Instead of the blackness of
unconsciousness that follows when one faints, (See “Thick Darkness Gathered Around Me,”

“I experienced an overwhelming consciousness of unbelievable light. It was only a
brief moment that I felt this surge, but when it had finished, my mind was filled with a
comprehension and understanding that I did not have just the moment before. I began to
remember events in my past that seemed like they had just happened yesterday, but were
actually incidents that I had experienced (hundreds of years ago in some situations) in other
mortal lives upon this earth.” (“What Did Joseph Smith Tell Christopher During Their First
Visit?” Marvelous Work and a Wonder®, 2011, A Marvelous Work and a Wonder Purpose Trust, 21

(^45) In similar fashion, Christopher was to carry the burden of the work Joseph began. On
December 10, 2010, he wrote the following in his Daily Journal: “NOTE: Any who have been involved
in some aspect of this work will be contacted and instructed individually how not to be involved in
this work any longer. The truth is here to set you free. Not burden you! The burden is all mine! Now
