Joseph Smith Biography

(Grace) #1
Thirty-One (1836)

(^77) SNS, 176. “We were taught that the False Order of Prayer is expecting to receive “further
light and knowledge” by building an altar with our own hands, prostrating ourselves before God (as
if He wants us to do this), and by our words, calling upon God to deliver. Through this method, we
can be deceived by our own mind or by those who profess to be “trained in the ministry,” who
likewise are deceived by their own minds, and give us their religions, opinions, and perceptions. In
contrast to this ubiquitously accepted form of prayer, the True Order of Prayer teaches us the proper
way to pray and receive the further light and knowledge, or better, a correct understanding of the
mysteries of God. (The sign of this is given with our arms raised above our heads and lowered, as in
the act of receiving.)”
