Joseph Smith Biography

(Grace) #1
Thirty-Nine (1844)

(^64) “Joseph knew that the various translations of the Bible were incorrect, and that many of
the plain and precious parts had been lost through faulty translations and the deliberate agendas of
those who had put it together. With this in mind, Joseph set about to rewrite the Bible according to
what he knew the real truth to be. Keep in mind, Joseph knew that the Bible itself was a great
“stumbling block” to the people. ...Joseph inquired through the U&T as to whether or not he
should complete the retranslation of the Bible. He was told to limit his translation to what the
U&T would show him, as it was not his calling to put all of the plain and precious parts back,
this task being reserved for [he] who would translate the sealed portion of the Book of
Mormon.” (“The Pearl of Great Price,” Marvelous Work and a Wonder®, 2011, A Marvelous Work

Saints, being the funeral sermon of Elder King Follett. Reported by Willard Richards, Wilford
Woodruff, Thomas Bullock and William Clayton. ();

) “This was not a stenographic report, but a carefully and skillfully prepared one made by
these men who were trained in reporting and taking notes. Evidently, there are some imperfections in
the report and some thoughts expressed by the Prophet which were not fully rounded out and made
complete; nevertheless it contains many wonderful truths pertaining to the subjects discussed and
therefore is valuable in giving us a better understanding than we would have without it.” DHC, 6:302
