eye contact with another person; this is lacking when a subject looks at the cam-
era or some point in the camera room. Even in profiles, I will place a person
where I want the subject to look.
On each camera support, I use the Manfrotto 322RC2 ball head with large
grip. I love this head, because it makes adjusting the camera so fast and easy—
and if you tilt your camera frequently, it’s a must!


So many times, a lifeless portrait can be
brought to life with just a tilt of the cam-
era. In the first photo, the vertical and hor-
izontal lines in the background look too
structured. In the second photo, the tilt of
the camera adds an interesting look to an
otherwise ordinary portrait.
