Picture Yourself Making Jewelry and Beading

(Wang) #1

1.Use the ruler to measure and mark one 5”
and two 2” pieces of 4 × 1 mm rectangle
sterling silver wire.

2.Using a jeweler’s saw or tin snips, cut the
4 × 1 mm rectangle sterling silver wire into
one 5” and two 2” lengths.

3.File each end of the 5” and 2” rectangle wire
pieces to remove any burs or rough edges.
If desired, you can use the file to round the
ends of the rectangle wire pieces. Use a fine
grit sanding pad to go over the area you filed
to smooth the edges and remove any file
marks.

4.Use the ruler to measure and mark^1 ⁄ 16 ” from
each end of the 5” and 2” pieces of rectangle
wire and place a mark in the center of the
wire. This will be where you will drill the
holes to attach the rectangle wire pieces to
the chain and wire wrapped loop beads.

5.Put on your safety glasses. Place the 5” and
2” rectangle wire pieces onto a hard, flat
surface and put the point of the awl on the
mark that you made^1 ⁄ 16 ” from each end of
the rectangle wire. Firmly strike once on the
top of the awl with a hammer to make a
pilot hole for drilling holes into the rectangle
wire.

6.Using a^1 ⁄ 16 ” drill bit, drill holes into each end
of the rectangle wire pieces with a handheld
rotary tool, flex shaft, or drill press (don’t
forget to wear your safety glasses).

7.Use the file or fine grit sanding pad to
eliminate any burs or rough edges left from
drilling holes into the rectangle wire pieces.
