First published in 1937,Lookmagazine was a bi-
weekly general interest magazine, one of the first and
longest-running pictorial magazines in American
publishing history. Gardner Cowles, Jr., son of an
Iowa publishing family responsible for several key
media acquisitions in the Des Moines area, launched
Look as a competitor to Time’s Life magazine
(whose publication lifespan mirrorsLook’s). Be-
cause the Cowles media group continued to acquire
new publications,Lookwas subsequently published
under various company names: Look, Inc. (1937–
1945); Cowles Magazines (1946–1965); and Cowles
LOOK
