Biography


Born in Brooklyn, New York, September 13, 1939. Enlisted
in the U.S. Army, 1961–1964; worked as a technical
sergeant, photographer, and photo technician. Attended
Cooper Union, New York, B.F.A. 1974; University of
New Mexico, Albuquerque, New Mexico, M.F.A. 1986.
Received a CAPS Grant in photography from the New
York State Council on the Arts, 1974; Columbia Uni-
versity poetry fellowship, 1974; Ford Foundation Grant,
1977; National Endowment for the Arts grants, 1982,
1984, 1986, 1992; Maine Photographic Book Competi-
tion, Book of the Year award for the Twelvetrees Press
MonographJoel-Peter Witkin, 1986; International Cen-
ter of Photography Award, 1988; Cooper Union Distin-
guished Alumni Citation, 1988; Chevalier des Artes et
Lettres award, 1990; National Endowment for the Arts
and American Center in Paris residency grant, 1993;
Cooper Union Augustus Saint Gaudens Medal, 1996.
