Biography


Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, August 28, 1916.
Attended School of Commercial Art and Lettering, Phila-
delphia, 1934–37. Civilian Photographer, U.S. Signal
Corps, Philadelphia, 1941–45; commercial photographer
forFlair, Glamour, Harper’s Bazaar, Junior Bazaar, Seven-
teen, Mademoiselle, Look,Vogue, 1946–1967; photographs
illustrate Truman Capote’s book,Local Color, 1950; on-set
photographer for the filmsWalk on the Wild SideandFive
Finger Exercise, 1960. Instructor at Parsons School of
Design, New York, 1975–1983; lectured at State Univer-
sity of New York, Stockton State College, New Jersey, and
the University of Maryland, College Park, 1981; lectured
at Yale University, New Haven and University of Virginia,
Charlottesville, 1983; taught Thesis Class in Photography
at the School of Visual Arts, New York, 1985–86. Creative
Artists Public Service Fellowship Grant, New York State
Council for the Arts, 1977–78; National Endowment for
the Arts Grant, 1978; John Simon Guggenheim Memorial
Fellowship, 1979. Died in New York, New York, March 2,
2001.
