In 1955, Jacobi moved to rural Deering, New
Hampshire with her son John and his wife Beatrice;
she continued photographing, exhibiting, and teach-
ing. In the later part of her life, she found time to
explore untapped interests in beekeeping, gardening,
and politics. The University of New Hampshire at
Durham awarded her an Honorary Degree in 1973,
and the University holds The Lotte Jacobi Archive
comprised of 47,000 negatives, several hundred study
and exhibition prints, three portfolios, as well as let-
ters, catalogues, documents, and other printed mate-
rial. She died in Concord, New Hampshire, in 1990.

Biography


Born in Thorn, West Prussia, Germany, August 17, 1896;
naturalized American citizen, 1941. Attended the Acad-
emy of Posen (1912–1916) where she studied art history
and literature, the Bavarian State Academy of Photogra-
phy in Munich for film and photography, and the Uni-
versity of Munich (1925–1927), where she studied art
history. Attended the University of New Hampshire,
Durham, 1961–1962; studied graphics, art history,
French, and literature; Atelier 17, Paris, etching and
engraving, 1962–1963. Married Fritz Honig in 1916,
divorced, 1924; son, John Frank Hunter. Married the
publisher Erich Reiss in 1940 (he died in 1951). Director
of Jacobi Studio of Photography, Berlin, from 1927–
1935; operated a portrait studio in New York City from
1935–1955, a gallery from 1952–1955; proprietor of
Jacobi Studio and Gallery, Deering, New Hampshire,
1963–1970. A founder of the Department of Photogra-
phy, Currier Gallery of Art, Manchester, New Hamp-
shire, 1970, (Honorary Curator of Photography, 1972–
1978). Awarded an Honorary Degree in 1973 at the Uni-
versity of New Hampshire at Durham. Recipient: Silver
Medal, Royal Photography Salon, Tokyo, 1931; First
Prize, British War Relief Photography Competition,
LifeMagazine, New York, 1941; First Prize, New Hamp-
shire Art Association, 1970; New Hampshire Governor’s
Award for the Arts, 1980; Erich Salomon Prize, West
Berlin, 1983. Died in Concord, NH, May 6, 1990.
