Biography


Born in Rochester, NY, in 1953. Attended St. Lawrence Uni-
versity, Canton, NY, B.S., 1974; completed graduate stu-
dies with Nathan Lyons at the Visual Studies Workshop in
Rochester, NY, 1977. Chief Photographer for the Repho-
tographic Survey Project, 1977–1979; Assistant Director of
Photography at Sun Valley Center for the Arts, Sun Valley,
Idaho, 1978–1981; Fine Arts Specialist, Arizona State Uni-
versity, Tempe, AZ, 1982–1996; Regents Professor of Art,
Arizona State University, Tempe, AZ, 1996–present.
Received Emerging Artist Fellowship from the NEA in
1979; Ferguson Award, Friends of Photography, Carmel,
CA, 1980; NEA Fellowships in 1982, 1984; Awards in the
Visual Arts Fellowship, 1986; Brandeis University Creative
Arts Award, 1990; Kraszna Krausz Award for Best Books
in Photography, 1992; Japan/U.S. Creative Artist Fellow-
ship, Friends of Photography, 1993; Distinguished Re-
