Biography


Born in Hoboken, New Jersey, 26 May 1895. Attended
Training School for Teachers, New York, 1914–1917;
assistant in different photography studios such as Arnold
Genthe, 1912–1917; studied at Clarence White School,
Columbia University, New York, 1917. Opened portrait
studio, San Francisco, 1919; portrait photographer, San
Francisco, 1919–1934; 1934–1935; became associated
with economist Paul Schuster Taylor working on plight
of migrant agricultural workers; married 1935. Farm
Security Administration photographer (known as Reset-
tlement Administration until 1937) under Roy Stryker,
San Francisco, 1935–1939; publication ofAmerican Exo-
duswith Paul Taylor, 1939; photographer for United
States Bureau of Agricultural Economics, 1940; photo-
grapher for U.S. War Relocation Agency, San Francisco,
1942; Office of War Information, 1943–1945; freelance
photography forLifeand other magazines, 1953–1957;


instructor of photography at California School of Fine
Arts, 1957–1958; freelance photographer, Asia, South
America, Middle East, 1958–1962. Guggenheim Founda-
tion Grant, 1941. Died in Marin County, California, 11
October 1965.
