140 Human Resources Management for Public and Nonprofi t Organizations
Agencies should develop volunteer recruitment strategies to reach
individuals whose interests and skills are likely to match the needs of the
organization. This is extremely important given the extent of societal
changes. Organizations need to be creative in their volunteer assignments
and recruitment strategies. To facilitate good staffi ng decisions, key staff
should be involved in the development of job descriptions for the volun-
teers they will supervise or work with. Volunteers should receive training
on how to perform their tasks and on the performance standards of the
agency. Board members are different from service volunteers; however,
they should undergo development activities and also be evaluated for their
contributions.
Agencies alone should not benefi t from the use of volunteers. The
volunteer experience should provide individuals with opportunities for
personal and professional growth.
