Serving school lunch to children began in the early

1900s when is was believed that many children did

not eat a nutritious midday meal. This began in

Boston, but it didn’t happen everywhere.

In America’s colonial times, the midday

meal was called dinner. It was the biggest

meal of the day. Most families ate this meal

together at home, even if the

children attended school.

Supper was the evening meal, and it

was typically smaller and made up

of leftovers.

Parents were without jobs, and their children went

government of President Franklin D. Roosevelt

bought up the extra food and opened kitchens

School Lunch Act to provide lunch in all schools.
