LESSON SIX - HARMONY
Learning to play together
What will you learn in Lesson 6?
In this lesson you will learn:
- How to read more than one note at once
- About chords and how they are written in sheet music
- Some possible ways of playing chords
What is harmony?
Harmony (noun) = when 2 or more notes are played together
Early music was written for a solo instrument or voice with no accompaniment
- this was called monophonic music (literally meaning one sound). However,
the music we enjoy today usually has different notes being played simultane-
ously. So it is really important to be able to ready more than one note at any
given time.
So far you have learnt how to read a single line of music, but now we are going
to look at how sheet music shows that more than one note should be played at
once. This lesson is a challenge, but do not lose heart as it is one which is pos-
sible to master fairly easily.
