Tommy ’ s prayers and the many others that were offered for me were
pivotal in helping me come back fully intact.
Five years after this episode, my brain experienced a similar but
much more serious trial. Within a few days of “ checking out ” with
symptoms like before, I began to have grand mal seizures. They
were so severe that they could not be alleviated without totally
paralyzing my body and putting me on a respirator to force me to
breathe. For those of you without a medical background, let me
explain that being put on a respirator has serious potential side
effects. In fact, after a patient has been on one for a couple of
days, it is quite rare that he or she will recover with the same or a
similar IQ. After I spent weeks in the ICU, the medical staff sug-
gested that my husband make arrangements for where he planned
to place me; I was told that those on my medical team had run
out of hope that I would return. Yet one person who witnessed my
healing in the hospital that day remembers what happened — Molly
Anne Tyson, the granddaughter of Reverend Tommy Tyson. These
are her words.
I received word that Kitty was sick. Deathly sick.
To this day, I do not remember how we were cleared to
enter the ICU. I do remember that many others were not.
And I do not remember who led us to Kitty ’ s bedside, where
she lay like mashed potatoes. I remember that the nurse was
not keen on the idea of us being there, but I asked if we
could pray for Kitty, and she allowed us to. We put oil on our
hands [Jewish healing ritual] and put our hands on Kitty and
prayed. To pray is simply to communicate spiritually, and it
looks like many different things for many different people.
What I believed happened in our spiritual communication
that day was that the power of God was activated and realized
in and through all of the many people praying in alignment
that day with God, with Kitty ’ s mind/will/emotions, and with
each other. That day, her body “ adjusted ” and came into align-
ment with what was true for Kitty in that moment — that her
whole self was to continue living on earth.
