Introduction

Successful reading

In order to read well, pupils need to orchestrate a range of skills from basic
decoding through to inference, deduction and being aware of the writer’s purpose
and how that affects the choices they made.

Successful readers:

  • are confident in what they are doing and know how they should approach and
    read a text;

  • recognise that texts are about much more than the words on the page;

  • predict what will happen next;

  • ask questions of the text;

  • make links with other texts they have read both within and across various
    media;

  • are able to relate what they read to their experience;

  • pass judgements;

  • evaluate text for veracity and usefulness.
