ABACUS – DIVISION OF FRACTIONS

a) If you are through with fraction – multiplication, fraction - division will not be difficult.

b) Consider this example :^10 45 −^6 32.

c) First, change them into improper fractions. You will get the improper fractions as

5

(^54) and
3
(^20) respectively.
d) In multiplication, you multiplied the 54 and 20, the numerators; 5 and 3, the
denominators and after dividing the numerator value by the denominator, you obtained
the answer.
e) In this problem, you have to divide. Here improper fraction^545 is the dividend and
3
(^20) is the divisor.
f) Invert the divisor. Then^203 will appear as 203.
g) Now consider^545 and 203 as a new pair of fractions and apply the multiplication rules.
h) Multiply the numerators of the new pair of fractions. The value is 54 X 3 = 162.
Multiply the denominators of the new pair of fractions. The value is 5 X 20 = 100.
