To gain the most dramatic e!ect from the darker shades, craft an area of light just above the

steps at the end of the tunnel to indicate a patch of sunlight. Use the sharp edge of a pastel for

the sides of the steps. To prepare the painting for the next stage of light and shade, gently rub

the pastel into the background in the direction of the subject.

Add small areas of light among the

trees for contrast.
