WehaveseeninChapter1thatagivenloadproducesacalculablevalueofstressinastructuralmember
andhenceacorrespondingvalueofstrainoncethefullvalueoftheloadistransferredtothemember.
However, after this initial or “instantaneous” stress and its corresponding value of strain have been
attained,agreatnumberofstructuralmaterialscontinuetodeformslowlyandprogressivelyunderload
