of four days; surf instructor Gary King
offers half-day lessons from £

Barricane Beach, half a mile north, you’ll

and delicious nightly curries at the
Barricane Beach Cafe (£10).

5 TREYARNON, CORNWALL

Dog-friendly Treyarnon has top castling
sand, a rockpool the size of a swimming
pool, a cave that tunnels beneath the
headland and clean, paddle-friendly
waters — but, frankly, the main reason
I’ve visited over the past seven years has
been Rose’s Ice Cream, a happy pink
caravan that looked like a child’s drawing.
Rose was as lovely as her clotted cream
vanilla, but disaster has struck. Citing
“the actions of other parties”, Rose claims
she has been forced to close. This is a
national tragedy. The Sunday Times
demands that Rose is allowed to reopen.

coastal road trip p

6 ACHMELVICH BAY, HIGHLANDS
Five miles up the B869 from Lochinver,
you’ll find a beach of white sand,
limpet-encrusted rock and, if the sun’s
shining, water that looks as though it’s
been imported from the Maldives. Don’t
be deceived by its apparent isolation:
Achmelvich has a popular campsite,
and it gets busy (pitches from £10;
shorecaravansite.yolasite.com).
Fishermen cast for haddock and pollock,
sailors launch dinghies, kayakers set off
on expeditions and couples simply sit
and stare. If you need isolation, cross the
headland at the north end of the bay to
the sister beach. It has no name I’m aware
of, and few footprints, either.
7 BUDE, CORNWALL
Not so long ago, Bude was an exemplar of
the failing seaside town: all rough pubs
and fading hotels. You came, you surfed
side. Over the past two months, he has made
ve top 40. First up, our beach of the year...
