Everywhere on Rarotonga there are little paved pathways leading to
the centre of the island. These are designed to give the inhabitants
and tourists the quickest possible route in an emergency to the
higher-lying interior of the island, where they will be better protected
from tsunamis and cyclones. The number of cyclones is expected to
increase sharply in future as a result of climate change.
