29 percentfewerofthemthanexpected
developedParkinson’sdisease.Evenamong
thosewhoalreadyhadthedisease,these
drugsappearedtoslowitsprogression.
Nowresearchersaretestingthemost
promisingofthesedrugs,isradipine,ina
clinicaltrial.Ifthetrialconfirmsthatitcan
slowfunctionaldecline,“itwillchangethewaywetreatParkinson’s
disease,”saysDrTanyaSimuni,directoroftheNorthwesternMedicine
Parkinson’sDiseaseandMovementDisordersCenterinChicago.
Andsinceisradipineisinwideuse already, it could be made available
quickly to those who need it.
