Buki, Kabuti or Tirere – many of the
traditional dances on Kiribati have
one thing in common: they are
supposed to mimic the movements of
the frigate bird. The bird appears on
the island’s coat of arms and is
considered to be a symbol of peace
and harmony. The youth dance
troupe from the capital South Tarawa
meet for rehearsals twice a week.


Akamatang Bateiti collects mangrove
seeds to be planted near a village on
Kiribati. The trees protect the beach
from erosion whilst at the same time
forming a barrier against the sea. This
results in less seawater getting into the
groundwater. Estimates suggest that
the mangrove forests are shrinking at
a rate of 2.5 per cent a year.

inhabitants of Kiribati can use for farming as a way of
