Around 1390 TAMERLANE, an adventurer, attached
himself to another Mongol dynasty in Turkestan by mar-
riage and reorganized an empire around his capital, at


SAMARKAND. His conquests did not survive him. Other
Mongols recovered Turkestan. Tamerlane’s descendants
went on to found a “Mogul” empire in India.
