TYPOGRAPHY, HEADLINES AND INFOGRAPHICS^373

  1. Sometimes editorial bias can creep into news headlines. At the con-
clusion of a capital punishment case, one so-called conservative
newspaper ran this headline: “Smith dies for killing two.” A so-called
liberal paper ran this headline: “State executes Smith.” Critics of the
liberal paper said that its headline puts the blame on the state and
thus reveals the paper’s position against the death penalty, whereas
the conservative newspaper’s headline emphasizes the prisoner’s
responsibility for the crime. Do you agree? Can you detect any bias
in the headlines in the latest issue of your local paper?

  2. Lettering styles are very important in the way businesses present
their trade names in advertising and on the products themselves (in
other words, in the businesses’ logos). Which logos are the most
memorable? A logo is a representation of a company’s name or
emblem in a consistent and distinctive type style. What role do letter-
ing styles play in making logos dramatic or visually appealing?
