xenobiotic A xenobiotic (Greek xenos“foreign” and
bios“life”) is a compound that is foreign to a living
organism. Principal xenobiotics include: drugs, carcino-
gens, and various compounds that have been intro-
duced into the environment by artificial means.

X ray Electromagnetic radiation of shorter wavelength
than ultraviolet radiation (10–11m to 10–9m or 0.01 nm

to 1 nm [0.00001 to 3,000 angstroms]) produced by
bombardment of atoms with high-quantum-energy par-
ticles. Can pass through many forms of matter and is
used medically and industrially to examine internal
structures of organs, bodies, and materials.
