304 Introduction to Human Nutrition
a Green Paper called “Promoting healthy diets and
physical activity: a European dimension for the pre-
vention of overweight, obesity and chronic diseases.”
This was followed in May 2007 by the Commission’s
white paper outlining strategies/initiatives in the area
of diet, physical activity, and health aimed at promot-
ing good health and quality of life and reducing risks
of disease. Nutrition is clearly recognized as having a
key role in public health and, together with lifestyle,
has a central position within the strategy and actions
of the Community in public health.
12.7 Perspectives on the future
The food we eat is an area of everyday life that is very
heavily regulated from the food safety point of view,
including chemical and microbial hazards, but
increasingly from the nutritional point of view. The
bedrock of sensible nutrition regulation planning is
the availability of good data and the intelligent use of
that data to both inform and challenge the policy-
makers. Globalization of the food supply has been
accompanied by evolving governance issues that have
produced a regulatory environment at the national
and global level led by large national, and interna-
tional agencies in order to facilitate trade and to
establish and retain the confi dence of consumers in
the food supply chain.
