II. A Developmental Lesson Format
The developmental lesson is designed to teach about a major concept, event, or relation-
ship, and it is tailored to one lesson period. A lesson has an aim, either in the form of a ques-
tion or a statement, that defines the topic for the day. Sometimes a teacher will open the les-
son with the aim already written on the board and sometimes the aim question or statement
will be elicited from students during a motivation. Key to the developmental lesson is sys-
tematic questioning designed to achieve specific learning objectives. Carefully constructed
questions are used to draw information from students in order to develop an outline of
notes on the board. Generally, a model outline is available in advance. Medial summary
questions are used to help students summarize learning at crucial points in the lesson. By
the end of the lesson, multiple students answer the aim question or if it is a statement, a
question based on it. Medial summary questions, final summary questions and applications
are also used to assess student understanding.
