a few showers in places on
Sunday and Monday.

T
he clouds were battleship
grey, rain bucketed down,
and a chill air made it feel
thoroughly wretched on
Wednesday over much of
the UK. But just as suddenly spring
returned again yesterday with blue
skies, puffy clouds and warm
sunshine over much of the country.
The depression that caused the
bleak weather shifted away and high
pressure moved back in, joining
forces with a huge high pressure
system that has dominated eastern
Europe for some time. It’s that vast
anticyclone which brings the
prospect of mostly settled dry
conditions this weekend.
Tomorrow could have widespread
warm sunshine, with the highest UK
temperatures quite possibly in the
Highlands where it could reach 17C
or 18C as southerly winds sweep
down the lee side of mountains
creating a föhn wind, when the air
becomes squashed and warms up as
it falls down from the high ground.
There is something similar in
prospect for Sunday, although a
touch cooler and cloudy in much of
southern Britain. But there is a fly in
the ointment because that cloud is
the harbinger of what could be
another bout of wet weather pushing
up from France, although there is
much uncertainty in forecasts.
By midweek it should be back to
dry calm sunny weather again, and
it looks like the rest of March will
feature above-average temperatures.
So, has spring finally banished
winter’s weather as Charlotte Brontë
wrote in Jane Eyre (1847): “Spring
drew on: she was indeed already
come; the frosts of winter had
ceased; its snows were melted, its
cutting winds ameliorated.”
What we can say for sure is that
spring has got off to a warm and wet
start, especially wet in places such
as the Scilly Isles and much of the
West Country which have had more
than their usual fill of March
rainfall. It has also been pleasantly
warm at times, and in some
unexpected places, such as Shetland.
“It’s spring fever. That is what the
name of it is,” Mark Twain wrote. “It
just fairly makes your heart ache,
you want it so!”
