Game 2: Pool Play vs. Ames Flyers (Ames, IA)
Result: KC Mavs 6
Ames Flyers 0

Recap:

KC opened the scoring in the first 30 seconds after a wrap-around by Hargadine, and they never looked
back. Stutzer was absolutely dominant in net, turning away shot after shot from the Flyers.

KC added goals from O’Bryant, Dungey, Hargadine, and Buscher... stretching their lead to 5-0 midway
through the 3rd period, in a seemingly comfortable game that wouldn’t require maximum effort to finish
off the game. But “Max” effort is the only way the Mavs know how to play. And what happened next
was one of the plays of the year.

Even with a comfortable 5-0 lead, Stutzer was dialed in, and he wanted that shutout. An offsides call
brought the faceoff just outside the KC zone. A few seconds later, a Flyers shot trickled through the
crease in front of Stutzer, and he followed the loose puck to the far post. But it was quickly chipped
back to a Flyers player in the slot who was all alone, seemingly just waiting to bury a wide-open
backhand shot. But Stutzer wasn’t about to relinquish the shutout. A sprawling, stretched out,
improbable glove save robbed the Flyers of their best scoring opportunity all game, and Stutzer
preserved his perfect game in net. The save brought the arena to their feet, along with congratulations
from all of Stutzer’s teammates prior to the next faceoff.

KC tacked on one more goal and recorded a statement win, including a dominant performance in net by
Stutzer.

Game 3: Pool Play vs. Sioux City Musketeers (Sioux City, IA)
Result: KC Mavs 5
Sioux City Musketeers 3

Recap:
Coming off their shutout win against Ames, the Mavs were ready to take on another Iowa team, this
time, from Sioux City. After an early push by Sioux City, Stutzer turned away several shots and kept the
score 0-0, relying heavily on his glove saves that had been so dominant throughout the tournament.
And with just under seven minutes remaining in the 1st period, O’Bryant opened the scoring for KC with
a nice move through the crease and behind the Sioux City goalie.

Sioux City wasn’t going down without a fight though, as they tied it just before the end of the 1 st period
after a failed clearing attempt in the KC zone. But KC answered quickly, with O’Bryant scoring a power
play wraparound goal. The Mavs took a 2-1 lead into the 2nd period, and never again relinquished the
lead.
