Strong forecheck pressure by Owings kept a play alive in the early part of the 2nd period, which resulted
in a goal by Wiesner, stretching the lead to 3-1, which is where it stayed until the first two minutes of
the 3rd period. Sioux City pulled within one, making it 3-2 after a rebound in the crease was tucked in for
their second goal of the game.
The Mavs would eventually add goals by Hargadine and Wiesner, finishing off Sioux City 5-3 and moving
to 3-0 in pool play.

Recap:
The Mavs got a scare early in this game, getting down 0-2 early in the 1st period, and it appeared they’d
have a fight on their hands if they intended to make the championship game for this tournament. A win
in the morning game vs. the Quad City Blues, and the Mavs were in the final. A loss, and they could’ve
been on the outside looking in, for the first time all season.
But with just 0:01 remaining on a KC power play in the 1st period, Hargadine opened the scoring for KC
with a wraparound goal, and the Mavs were in business. With the score now 2-1, KC began flipping the
script. The defensive forces of Hodgden & Phillips, Leath & Stephenson, and Hollon & Heffernan, along
with outstanding goaltending by Stutzer, ensured that the Blues never scored another goal the entire
game. What seemed like a great start for Quad City ended up being their only goals, on their way to
being dominated by KC.
The offensive outpouring started in the 2nd period and continued through the rest of the game. Brown,
Wiesner, and Hargadine joined in the scoring action, with Mullens adding the ninth goal of the morning
for KC following a tremendous effort to rush down the right side, slipping a backhand shot over the
goalie’s right side. After digging an 0-2 hole early in the game, KC returned 10 unanswered goals,
burying the Quad City Blues, and earning a birth into the championship game.
