Game 2: Pool Play vs. California Golden Bears (Burbank, CA)
Result: KC Mavs 5 (Regulation) 2 (shootout)
CA Golden Bears 5 (Regulation) 3 (shootout)
Recap:
The Mavs were looking to bounce back after the early loss to the Dallas Stars. The CA Golden Bears
were also a nationally ranked team, and KC would have its hands full.
Again, the Mavs struck first. Brown and Hargadine played a little give & go... with Brown feeding it back
to Hargadine in the slot to put the Mavs up 1-0. The lead didn’t last long though. The Golden Bears
capitalized on a man advantage, scoring a power play goal to tie it 1-1. But the first period scoring
wasn’t done, as KC returned the favor just 13 seconds later, regaining the lead on a 2-on-1 rush with
Buscher getting the second goal of the game for KC. Brown tacked on another breakaway goal to put
the Mavs up 3-1. But with just over two minutes remaining in the period, the Golden Bears went bar-
down to cut the lead to 3-2, and the Mavs went into the 2nd period hanging onto a one goal lead.
The Golden Bears opened the scoring in the 2nd period with an unfortunate redirection off the back
boards; the puck took an errant bounce back towards the crease and trickled in the net. This proved to
be the only goal of the 2nd period, and the teams went into the 3rd period tied 3-3.
Wiesner put the Mavs up 4-3 with a hard wrist shot halfway through the 3rd period, but it didn’t last
long. A skillful backhand shot by the Golden Bears tied it again at 4-4. The Mavs had their hands full,
and just couldn’t find any separation from the Golden Bears. Late in the game the Bears took their first
lead of the game, 5-4, with just over three minutes remaining. If the Mavs wanted to advance, they
would need some late game heroics. And that’s just what they did. KC pulled their goalie, added an
extra attacker, and moments later, Dungey fed Hargadine who scored with 0:42 seconds remaining in
regulation to tie it 5-5.
With the game ending in a 5-5 tie, the result would be settled in a shootout. The Mavs battled through
the first shootout period tied 2-2, which meant the teams would move to a one-shot each, sudden death
shootout. Unfortunately, the Mavs came out on the wrong side of the sudden death shootout, and a
hard-fought battle all game ended up being an overtime loss for KC.
