The most important work happens out in the real world, often with you.
Since you’re going to be doing it, you could probably use an overview of
what therapy for fear disorders entails.


Steps in Treating Fear Disorders


Psychological treatment of fear disorders is an orderly sequence of inter-
ventions designed to help terrified people realize that though their fear is
real, the danger it signals is not. The fearful must then be persuaded to
use that knowledge, rather than their feelings, as a basis for action.


Step 1: External Control


Before you can hold forth on the intricacies of fighting fear, people have
to be calm enough to listen. In Chapter 3, I outlined the technique for
