Chapter 10
PART FOUR: EXPLOSIONS INTO ANGER
Bad Chemicals or Bad People?
The traffic is even slower than usual tonight. The exit is backed up all the
way onto the freeway. You take your place in line and wait through six
cycles of red to green. Finally, it looks like you’re going to make it. But no.
The car in front of you stops on yellow. Well, next time for sure.
In your rear view you see a pickup squeezing by on the shoulder, push-
ing his way to the head of the line. He stops with his nose just in front of
your bumper. You studiously avoid eye contact and let up on your brake,
closing the space between you and the car ahead.
Green. The truck barges in front of you. You honk. The driver raises
a one-finger salute, guns his engine, and zooms ahead. At the next inter-
section he pulls in behind you and leans on his horn.

After a horrendous day of rushing around, you turn into the restaurant
parking lot at about 7:05, relieved that you weren’t considerably later. You
get out and rush in.
