plantation requires subsequent lifelong IMMUNO-
SUPPRESSIVE THERAPY to prevent rejection of the
transplanted cells. Though still experimental, islet
cell transplantation holds considerable promise as
a long-term or permanent treatment for type 1
diabetes.
