Step Six: In the Gradient Map dia-
log, under Gradient Options, turn
on the Reverse checkbox. Click OK,
and you’ll see the image appear as
a negative.


Step Seven: Looking good so far,
but we need the background to be
pure black so that none of it will be
selected. We’ll do that with a Levels
adjustment. Press Command-L (PC:
Ctrl-L) and click on the Shadows
eyedropper (the one on the left,
below the Options button), which
we’ll use to set the black point. Click
on the lightest gray area of the back-
ground to force the background to
black. If you see another gray area,
click on it with the eyedropper too.
Don’t click OK yet.
Move the midtone (gray) Input
Levels slider to 1.55 to bring back
some of the highlighted areas on
the subject. Make any other adjust-
ments as needed, depending on
how much detail you want in the
subject. Click OK when done.
