› › HOW TO

Step 12: Back in the main
design image (where we cop-
ied the main subject), make sure
you have the main subject layer
selected and set the default colors
by pressing D. Once again, go to
Image>Adjustments>Gradient Map.
This time, leave the settings as they
are and click OK. This will convert
the image to black and white.
Press Command-L (PC: Ctrl-L)
to open Levels again and adjust the
contrast further, as needed. Click OK
when done.

Step 13: Go back to the original
image with the extracted poses,
and drag or copy the left-side
magenta pose layer to the main
design image. Then use Free Trans-
form to scale and position the layer
just toward the left side, overlap-
ping the main subject a little. Press
Enter when done. If the color seems
too intense once it’s in place, you
can lower the layer Opacity. Here
I lowered it to 75% and set the
layer blend mode to Multiply to
get some more detail. I didn’t like
the way the magenta spilled onto
to the main black-and-white image
in a few areas, so I used the Eraser
tool (E) to erase part of her arm over
the hair and part of her body over
the arm.
