› › HOW TO

Step 21: Lower the Opacity of the
halftone layer to 50%, and then add
a layer mask by clicking the Add
Layer Mask icon (circle in a square) at
the bottom of the Layers panel.
Select the Gradient tool (G) in
the Toolbar, and make sure your
Foreground color is set to black.
Click on the gradient thumbnail in
the Options Bar to open the Gradi-
ent Editor, choose the Foreground
to Transparent gradient (the second
from the left in the top row), and
click OK. Then click on the Radial
Gradient icon to the right of the gra-
dient thumbnail.
Click-and-drag to add a gradient,
starting from the head of the main
subject. The goal is to fade out the
halftone pattern effect around her
head area so it doesn’t obstruct the
main focus of the composition.

Step 22: If necessary, add layer
masks to the two colored poses and
use the Gradient tool to fade them
in any areas where you don’t want
them to obstruct the main subject.
Also, if the Multiply blend mode
doesn’t look right on the two color
pose layers, try any one of the many
blend modes and see what you
come up with. Sometimes just leav-
ing it set to Normal is fine, too.
