› › HOW TO

Step Three: In the View menu,
select the New Guide Layout fea-
ture. Check the Columns option
and set the Number to 4. Click OK
to add vertical guides that define the
four vertical quarters of the image.
With the Fibers layer still the active
layer, press Command-T (PC: Ctrl-T)
to get the Free Transform handles.
Click-and-drag outside the bound-
ing box to rotate the layer by about
–10°, and then move and scale it up
so it fully covers the far-left quad-
rant. Be sure to press the Enter key
to commit the transformation.

Step Four: Use the Rectangu-
lar Marquee tool (M) to select the
entire left quad. The selection will
snap to the gridline to make sure
it’s exactly one fourth (if it doesn’t
snap, make sure that View>Snap
is turned on). Press Command-J
(PC: Ctrl-J) to copy the selection to
a new layer. Press it again to dupli-
cate the new layer so that you now
have two layer copies of the left-
hand quadrant.

Step Five: With the topmost layer
active, go to Edit>Transform>Flip
Horizontal to flip it. Then switch to
the Move tool (V), hold the Shift key,
and drag that copy into the second
quadrant (holding down the Shift
key will make sure the layer stays
aligned with the first). When the
layer snaps into place, press Com-
mand-E (PC: Ctrl-E) to merge it with
the layer below it.
